The Cameron Middle/High School was designed to be both economically feasible and environmentally sensitive. The project, developed for Marshall County Schools, includes two gymnasiums.
The main gymnasium spans 10,300 square feet and offers seating for over 1,000 spectators. It features a central 50′ x 94′ collegiate-sized basketball and volleyball court, along with two full cross courts measuring 74′ x 50′, which can be separated by a motorized center divider curtain. An elevated jogging track with a poured sports flooring surface encircles the main court. The track is flanked by multiple weight training and fitness rooms, secured with overhead coiling aluminum grills and accessible via a controlled-access elevator. The gym also includes an adjacent concessions room equipped with commercial-grade appliances.
Both gymnasiums are outfitted with multiple scoreboards featuring message centers, PA and sound systems, motorized retractable glass backstops with integrated light strips, wall-mounted safety pads, volleyball posts and standards, net systems with judge stands, and climate control provided by collapsible, hypoallergenic fabric ductwork branded with custom team names and logos.
Each gymnasium is built with a tournament-grade, “second or better” floating wood athletic floor system. They are also supported by dedicated locker rooms, restrooms, and more than 700 square feet of gym storage space per gym.
Sustainable design features include extensive daylight harvesting with an automated daylight-sensing dimming system (Wattstopper), and over 5,000 square feet of translucent Kalwall window wall panels, offering a U-factor of 0.08 and a light transmittance rate of over 8%. Acoustic performance is optimized with high-NRC roof decking (Epic), high-STC-rated acoustic barriers, and custom acoustic wall panels, among other energy-efficient design attributes.
In support of community engagement, the owner emphasized that selected facilities would also be made available to the public. Among these is an “exergaming” space—an interactive exercise and wellness area combining physical activity with gaming—located adjacent to the physical education spaces.
